Interrupted Race Sees Öncü Score Points

Kawasaki Puccetti Racing rider Can Öncü ended his Donington WorldSSP weekend with a 12th place finish in what was a stopped and re-started Race Two.

The second WorldSSP race in the UK took place after the final Superbike Race and was held in overcast but dry conditions that have characterised this particular weekend. The first attempted start only lasted for two laps before a multi-rider incident saw a red flag appear to stop the race on grounds of safety.

The restart was held over 12 laps, not the planned 19, with full points awarded from the race winner to the 15th placed finisher.

In the race itself Can was 11th on lap one, and battled in the midfield positions from then on to finally take 12th place at the chequered flag. He thus scored points in both Donington races, having found a better race set-up for Race Two than Saturday’s opener.

After Donington Can is 15th in the championship standings, with 27 points.

Can Öncü, stated: “It was a difficult race with the red flag and the double start, but in the end we’ve scored some more points in the standings. Today we found a setup which meant our bike was performing better. But, starting further back on the grid, and with only twelve laps available in the end, made it difficult to take more than 12th position. We need to stay focused and continue to give it our all in order to achieve better results, maybe even at the next Autodrom Most round in a week’s time.”

Marcel Brenner (Viamo Racing by MTM Kawasaki) was 21st in Race Two. Gabriele Giannini (Prodina Kawasaki) crashed at Turn 12 and no scored.

Autodrom Most hosts the sixth round of WorldSSP, in just a few day’s time, 19-21 July.
