Misfortune Finds Öncü In Last Race Of 2024

Can Öncü (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) made a great start to the final race of the 2024  FIM Supersport World Championship season but was unable to finish after tucking the front on lap one and crashing out of contention.

Can had overcome the effects of a deep knee wound he suffered at the Estoril round well enough to race on both Saturday and Sunday at Jerez, but his luck ran out again after trying to put clean air between himself and the chasing pack early in Race Two.

For both rider and team a strong final race was the ambition, as this is the final WorldSSP weekend for the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R in its current 599cc form.

Next season Kawasaki Puccetti Racing will run a 636cc version of the Ninja ZX-6R, which is in the process of undergoing homologation checks before it can be raced in the WorldSSP Championship.

Öncü finished his last season in his current team in 13th place overall, with 92 points in total. Since he started riding inside the overall Kawasaki Puccetti Racing effort in 2021 he has scored 14 podium results, including a win at the Mandalika circuit in Indonesia last season on the Ninja ZX-6R.

Mexican rider Guillermo Moreno (Viamo by MTM Kawasaki) placed 23rd in Race Two at Jerez.

Can Öncü, stated: “Unfortunately my race didn't last long today. I was focused and motivated to score a strong result as I headed out to the start. I got away well and moved into the lead but I overdid it and crashed. I was unable to rejoin the race. I'm really sorry because this was my last race with Kawasaki Puccetti Racing and I would have liked to have scored a good result. I want to thank Manuel Puccetti and the whole team for these years together, an experience I won't forget.”
